The Oxford Project
Post Content

“In the spring and summer of 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein announced that he wanted to take free portraits of everyone in Oxford, Iowa (pop. 673). By the end of the summer, he’d photographed 670 Oxford residents. Twenty-one years later, Feldstein went back, and this time he brought along writer Stephen G. Bloom to document people’s stories.” – The Oxford Project

How Books Are Made

A great o.g. how-to documentary video on the process of printing a book. It’s a few minutes long, but it’s well worth the time.

Scenes from North Korea
Post Content

The Big Picture – “Celebrating 60 years of existence this year, North Korea holds out as the last Stalinist state in the world. In such a restrictive society, it is difficult – if not impossible – for residents to get news of the outside world, and for the outside world to see in. What photography comes out of North Korea is either state-produced, state-approved, or at the very least state-managed (visitors are restricted in their movement). Still, if you look over the following images with those restrictions in mind, one can still get some idea of life in North Korea in 2008. These photos were all taken within the past six months – some taken from the borders, peering in, others provided by North Korea itself, and several generously shared by freelance photographer Eric Lafforgue, who recently spent some time inside the country”…

50 People, 1 Question
Post Content

Bear with me. This video starts out slowly, but by the end there’s a genuine feeling of sadness and hopefulness. Well shot and well edited… Directed by Benjamin Reece. Amazing.

The Story: “Around two months ago, when we set out to film, it was another New Orleans day. A sure sign was the radiating humidity, a kind that encourages an entire coating of sweaty film. Once you get past the initial fear of the inevitable grime and heat, you feel a certain energy or “atmosphere”. Like a kid throwing himself without reserve into a mud fight. Haha…

We had an idea: ask as many people as possible, the same question. We didn’t know exactly why, I guess we were hoping to expose a slice human emotion (maybe). Just the simple act of reaching out and asking the question, is such a enthralling experience in itself. So go ahead, ask yourself…”

Days With My Father
Post Content

The talented Mr. Philip Toledano has put together an extremely touching photo documentary about his father and the final days of his life, entitled “Days With My Father”. His father is 98 years old and does not have Alzheimer’s, but has no short term memory. Although there aren’t many words, throughout the essay I found myself completely choked up trying not to cry as I work in an open space with 25 co-workers. It’s an extremely touching documentary and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Jason Lazarus
Post Content

Born in Kansas City, Jason moved to Chicago in ’94. In 2001 he enrolled in Columbia College’s MFA program in Photography, where he now teaches part-time. He spends the rest of his time blowing stuff up… well not really, but for this shot at least. If I could I would buy it, but I can’t so I’ll just enjoy rifling through his portfolio.
