Wholly fucking shit batman, this ain’t no joke. This is the real deal. It’s official. Nikon has finally released the successor to the hall-of-famed 28mm f/1.4 $4k “holy grail” lens. Only this time, they’ve given us more width, in addition to all the new fancy lens coatings and what have you, for less. I just caught the news from the ever popular Nikon Rumors website who kindly left a link trail to Bob Krist’s blog, who first broke the news with some of the first sample photos from this all new 24mm f/1.4. Fortunately, for those of you like myself, who’ve been waiting literally YEARS for a lens like this to come out, it’s cheaper than the 28mm f/1.4 that’s been selling on EBay by about $1000.00 which brings it’s Canadian retail price to $2,349.59… bank breaking I know…
Herein lies the conundrum as it was so elegantly put by “Global Guy” who commented on the Nikon Rumors post – “Ugh. $2,700 bucks for a 24mm. I guess Nikon just assumed that if jerks pay $4,000 for 28mm, they’d pay half for a 24mm. What I don’t understand is why this couldn’t be a 1.8 and ohhh, cut a grand off that price. Why is 85/1.4 $1000. Why is 35/2 so affordable. Why is 50/1.4 $450 bucks — but 24mm/1.4 is $2000 are you freaking kidding me??” – A very justifiable response.
The thing is, unless you move completely over to Canon, which has been known to happen, Nikon doesn’t make many other fast prime lenses comparable to this one. So really you only have 2 options… you can pay $4k for the original 28mm f/1.4 OR you could pay $2500 for the new and improved $24mm f/1.4. Having two options really is better than only one ;)
