I’m moving to Vancouver
Post Content

Yes. That’s right. You heard correctly. I’m leaving the city I said I’d never leave, to move across the country to a city I said I’d never live. Shows you just how much you think you know about life and where you think it’s gonna take you. But it’s interesting to see what you’re willing to do when you’re presented with an opportunity of a lifetime.

And what might you ask is this opportunity that would steal me from the comforts of my east coast hustle to move across the country to a city that virtually lives under a constant sheet of rain? Well, quite frankly, it’s the opportunity to work alongside one of the industries leading creative directors, Marcus Eriksson at a relatively new creative studio known to very few as Academy.

Located downtown Vancouver (Yaletown to be exact), a small team’s been working very hard producing some of the most complete interactive pieces for one of my personal favorite brands, Jordan. So I’m extremely pleased to announce that starting January 2010 I will be joining their roster, bringing my experience and skill set to the Academy doorstep.

The plan is to be out on the west coast for either Jan 4th or Jan 5th. So soon, yes I know, but with the 2010 Winter Olympics just around the corner I need to be out there as soon as possible to try and find a good place for a reasonable price in and around the new office.

I wish I could personally reach out to everyone but I find that it’s already taking a lot of time to break the news as it is and there’s just so many things that need to get done before I leave in such a short period of time (3 weeks). I figure writing a blog post with all the details will nail thousands of birds with a single stone.

Now a lot of people have been asking how I feel about the whole thing, considering how sudden it is and all. But I find it really hard to describe. Since the beginning of my “career” (2002) I’ve somehow managed to consciously or unconsciously land myself in situations where I have the opportunity to do good work, and of course I do realize that I’ve been very lucky in that respect, a lot of people aren’t in a position to do good work even though they have the talent and the ambition, they just lack the opportunity. So I’m doing what I’ve always done… just letting my instincts guide me to opportunity, and that thought comforts me.

It’s like in basketball, you spend you’re entire professional career training and practicing for that one moment, those final seconds of the game, where your teammates trust you enough to pass you the ball, and all you can do is hope that your training and hard work has prepared you for this moment… all you can do is let it fly and hope it goes in. Shoot till you miss, miss till you hit.

So to wrap this shit up, I would like to thank everyone who’s given me the opportunity work, collaborate, and have fun with this past year. If it’s true that inspiration comes from everywhere then I think it’s fair to say that everything, including everyone, has played a part in the way in which I combine various “things” to create new “things” of value, worthy of an audience. I would like to thank all the people who have been inspired by my work, those of you who’ve had the courage to let me know. Thank you for showing your support.

In the weeks to come I can almost guarantee I’ll be blogging less, twittering less… just doing less. I promise you all that as soon as I get everything settled, you’ll be hearing more from me. That may be a couple days, that may be a couple weeks, or even a couple months. But sooner or later I’ll be back on the social bandwagon to pick up right where I left off.

So until then, wish me luck. I’ll see you all soon :)

It rains on average 166 days/ year in Vancouver, compared with Toronto’s average of 145.
Maybe living there will teach you that Toronto is nowhere near the East Coast.
