This past summer I was contacted out of the blue from someone at Maple Leaf Sports asking to purchase a couple of my images to be used for the 2009-2010 Season Ticket Creative. I was skeptical at first, as I’m not in the business of selling my photography, but after speaking to some co-workers I figured what the heck, these photos aren’t making me any money just sitting around on Flickr…
So I sent them the high-res images and kinda forgot about the whole thing, thinking that the photos were being used as concepts for designs that may never see the light of day. But this morning that same co-worker ( the one that helped me decide to sell the photographs in the first place) showed up at the office with today’s Metro issue and inside was an ad for the Toronto Maple Leafs… with my photo as the backdrop!

I was pleasantly surprise to say the least that my photograph had in fact made it out of concepts and into the real world.

So this morning I went back and had a read through the emails that were exchanged between myself and the gentleman from Maple Leaf Sports and he mentioned that my photographs are being used for season ticket designs as well as some of the promotional banners out on the street! I’m actually really excited to see my stuff out in public because this will be my first published photography work… I lie, I actually had something published in Monacle Magazine earlier this year, which reminds me that I should write a post about it soon, anyways…
My only question is… considering that my photographs were found through Flickr… should they have gotten a commission from this sale? Hmmm. Either way, it just adds to the long list of reason why I love Flickr.

really nice photo but shouldn’t the perspective be corrected on the city hall building?
its on such an angle
Yeah, I could have… but I didn’t. Instead of saying I “should have” corrected the distortion you should have said you’d “prefer” that I correct the distortion. The problem is that I have a different preference than you.
Congrats Greg! That’s huge. Isn’t it great feedback when your photograph is being used in a newspaper and who knows what else? The personal “great photo” “good use of lighting” is awesome don’t get me wrong but cooool right? lol. You can cut it out and put it on the fridge!
Wow, begs the question: were you paid by MLSE for your picture?
Of course I was…
Greg you are so sick! And WOW I didn’t know you had some work in Monocle. You never fail to surprise!
