It’s a really strange email to receive on a Friday afternoon at 5pm just before the weekend, but I was glad to receive it. The organization “Flash In The Can” event (FITC) is going down here in Toronto, and yours truly has been nominated as Best Canadian Designer. I know it’s kinda vein but since I have this blog I may as well use it to help me get some votes, right? Ok then, here it is… please head on over to their website and vote for me as Best Canadian Designer. I sure would love to take home that nice shiny glass trophy. VOTE FOR ME HERE… My site is listed under Marc-Gregory.com

The Big Picture has got a ridiculous photo essay narrating the underbelly of Mexico’s drug trafficing industry… “In December of 2006, Mexico’s new President Felipe Calderón declared war on the drug cartels, reversing earlier government passiveness. Since then, the government has made some gains, but at a heavy price – gun battles, assasinations, kidnappings, fights between rival cartels, and reprisals have resulted in over 9,500 deaths since December 2006 – over 5,300 killed last year alone. President Barack Obama recently announced extra agents were being deployed to the border and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton heads to Mexico today to pursue a broad diplomatic agenda – overshadowed now by spiraling drug violence and fears of greater cross-border spillover. Officials on both sides of the border are committed to stopping the violence, and stemming the flow of drugs heading north and guns and cash heading south.“…

Project Description – “The design concept of this private home literally springs upward from the pristine wooded site. Unbuildable as a spec home property, the unique form of the building is a literal response to the significant site challenges. Wedged between zoning setbacks, a stream buffer and a steep slope, the program massing was squeezed vertically into a three story scheme elevated above the uninterrupted ground plane flowing beneath…”

Shared information, linked data. It’s something the leaders of this new world believe in. It’s one of the fundamental concepts that various social networks like Wikipedia and Flickr have used to create such impactful enterprises and it’s even one of the cornerstones of President Barack Obama’s presidency. Make information as open and accessible as possible. And it’s within this concept of openness that a company like Facebook can rise above and beyond every major competitor…

Beautiful photo journalism from John Wildgoose. I especially love his Industrial collection. He’s also got what appears to be an interesting collection of necessary reading (obviously photography books).
